Jennie C.

Jennie C. was nominated as a rookie member of the month because she just kicked butt in our 4-week Little Black Dress Transformation Program. She shocked us all by not only dropping a significant amount of body fat but also increasing in muscle mass in just a short time. She demonstrates the amazing outcomes of a progressive strength training program.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you? I LOVE Pitbull (the musician)

What is your favorite exercise and why? I love barre classes. I danced since I was 4 so exercising in a way that feels so familiar along with great music is always so enjoyable for me.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far? Losing 7.5% body fat during the LBD challenge and running a half marathon in 2017.

What inspires and motivates you? Being around successful people!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD? Absolutely do it! It is such a supportive, motivating group of women (and Mike) who will always push you to be your best while putting a smile on your face :)

Kim L.

Kim L. was nominated because of how far she has come in just a few months. She really made a commitment to her health and and once she got the ball rolling there was no stopping her. She works out at 5am most days and really committed to nutritional changes as well and it shows. Down over 30 lbs since June!! So proud of her!

What is your hometown? I live in Rocky Hill but was born and raised in Middletown.

What brought you to FBD? High Blood Pressure. I first learned about FBD on Facebook. I liked the idea of small, women-only workouts.

How long have you been training with FBD? I began in June of 2018.

What do you do in the “real world?” I am an office manager for a roofing company in Bloomfield.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you? Fun fact about me is that I love to sew.

What is your favorite exercise and why? For some odd reason, I love the ab/core workouts.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far? I have lowered my Blood Pressure and have lost a total of 32 pounds in the process. I have learned to eat healthy and actually make it taste good! I feel amazing and for the first time in a very long time, I feel good about myself.

What inspires and motivates you? I very much want to come off my Blood Pressure medicine, this is my goal. Through eating healthy and exercise, I believe this is achievable.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD? Join! Nobody is judging you, everyone is encouraging and it’s a friendly, welcoming environment. Do it for YOU!

The FBD Team chose Chevaughn because she has been so dedicated and inspiring since the beginning just a few short months ago. She has already made so many improvements and never backs down from a challenge. She even completed the New Haven Gauntlet race with us this October, we’re so proud of her.

Here is Chevaughn’s story…

“Thanks to the FBD family for nominating me as the September member of the month.
This is incentive enough that I am recognized and that is why I love working out at FDB.”

FBD: Where are you from?
“My home town is west Hartford but I am originally from Jamaica.”

FBD: Tell us why you joined FBD and about your experience so far.
“I have been to a few gyms which would seem fun for a while but then I got bored because they would do the same routine daily doing the same work out all the time… There was this new hire in the [work] department … KATIE Z., and all she talked about was the all women’s gym and how great you guys (FBD) were. I remember going to an all women’s gym in Texas after my 2nd child which was a pleasant experience and I did see results. Katie invited me to a boot camp at the gym in June 2018 and I have been going since. When I [first] went, although some of the exercise were not familiar to me, the coaches there made sure I knew what to do and how to do it properly that stuck with me and it was fun. Also, how everyone greeted me like I wasn’t a new member but like I had been at the gym for months. I needed results and consistency in a workout plan and I found it at FBD. I also feel supported in what we do each time we come to work out. There is no question too uncomfortable to ask. My day is complete after a workout. ”

FBD: What is a fun fact we don’t know about you?
A fun fact about me is that I love to Dance.

FBD: What is your favorite exercise?
Burpee – WHY? It is a complete total body workout and I feel I did go to the gym and it is working.

FBD: What is your biggest success so far?
“My biggest fitness success is that I can work out 5 to 6 days a week without feeling tired. [Plus] I feel less stressed, and more laughter, STOPPED taking antacids and am able to follow a meal plan.
What inspires me is my kids and husband and motivation comes because I will look and feel good if I continue working out.”

FBD: What would you say to someone on the fence about joining?
“I would let them know that everyone is treated like you have your own personal trainer, you are like family within FBD. The exercise routine and times fits a working person schedule. The trainers are good listeners.”

Jenn B.
Jenn was chosen by the team for her dedication and consistency – 5:15am most days of the week!! She has clearly gotten leaner, stronger, and more confident! Keep up the great work, Jenn!

What is your hometown?

I am from Hadley, Massachusetts which is a few minutes from UMASS Amherst.

What brought you to FBD?

I came to FBD after hearing about the gym from a coworker (Leslie). I was looking for a place to get a great workout with a supportive community.

How long have you been training with FBD?

I have been training with FBD since last February.

What do you do in the “real world?”

In the real world I am an elementary school special education teacher in Newington. I have been there for 19 years and LOVE my job.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?

When I was growing up my dream was to be the first female third baseman for the Boston Red Sox.

What is your favorite exercise and why?

I enjoy all things HIIT! Crazy I know but I love HIIT! I love the high intensity and cardio and I can get all my frustrations and stress out.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far?

One accomplishment is I have increased my strength. I have a neck/back injury and I have strengthened my whole body which has helped alleviate some of my pain. I also love that I just feel strong!! Another bonus from my time with FBD is I am beginning to approach my goal clothing size. I am fitting into clothes I haven’t worn in years and even had to buy new jeans because none of my old ones fit!

What inspires and motivates you?

I am inspired and motivated by the strong people around me. I also spend time reading motivational stories and quotes to find inspiration I try to stay positive and always look for the silver lining.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD?

FBD is an amazing group of strong dedicated women. Working out with such an fantastic group helps to motivate me to push myself harder and try things I never would have tried before. The safe, supportive environment makes working out fun and the results are amazing.


August 2018 Members of the Month

Kate was nominated by the training team as a long-term member of the month because she is super dedicated and hard-working, has a great personality, and has made tremendous gains. She is a true inspiration to others and we applaud her on her commitment!

What is your hometown?
Newington

What brought you to FBD?
I knew I was out of shape and needed help to get into a healthier routine. Saw one of Meaghan’s introductory offers and decided to check it out – So glad I did !

How long have you been training with FBD?
Coming up on my 2 year anniversary

What do you do in the “real world?”
I’m an accountant at Eversource Energy, have been married to my husband for 30 years and have a 25 year old son and a 23 year old daughter.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I do a pretty good imitation of a monkey

What is your favorite exercise and why?
Bent over rows – I used to have terrible back pain and I really think these have helped strengthen my back and eliminate the discomfort.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far?
My Doctor is no longer threatening me with high blood pressure medication and I am wearing skinny jeans ! Last year I ran my first 5K and I no longer feel I need to own stock in Ben Gay. My latest physical showed proven results – all green check marks on my screenings !

What inspires and motivates you?
The coaches and members at FBD inspire and motivate me every class. Just how much better I feel makes me want to continue working out and challenge myself.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD?
Cue the Nike phrase … The classes are welcoming, never boring and set up for all levels. Check it out, give it a try – you won’t regret it

KATE M.

Melissa was nominated as our first-ever “rookie” of the month. New to us this August, our training team says she inspires them and others around her, especially being just 4 months post-partum. She never gives up or makes excuses!

What is your hometown?
Berlin

What brought you to FBD?
I saw an ad on Facebook for the Little Black Dress challange and it looked like exactly the kick in the butt that I needed to get back in shape after pregnancy.

How long have you been training with FBD?
Since August 2018

What do you do in the “real world?”
I am a Global Claims Adjuster for Travelers Insurance.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I have an almost 5 month old daughter named Zoe.

What is your favorite exercise and why?
HIIT because it’s varied so I don’t get bored and you can get in a really great workout in a short amount of time which is pretty ideal as a mom and someone who works full-time.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far?
Running a 5k

What inspires and motivates you?
I want to be a strong and healthy role model for my daughter. And I want to be able to fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans ?.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD?
The workouts and small class sizes are really great and the instructors are so motivating and encouraging. All the other members have made me fell so welcomed that it feels like I’ve been coming for years even though it’s only been a few weeks.

Cousins Julie and Lindsay are our July Members of the Month!

Julie and Lindsay have been hard-working from the very beginning. This summer they kept up with a consistent training schedule despite vacations and beautiful weather. They always impress us with 100% effort and the new challenges they take on, like terrain and road races. It’s also nice to see them be so welcoming to new members.

I love lifting weights.

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far?

My cellulite has decreased dramatically and I am finally toned.

What inspires and motivates you?

My surroundings ( my husband and kids are my biggest fans) family, friends(FBD).

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD?

It’s an amazing, comfortable, motivating and safe place that helps you achieve your goals.

I wanted to find a place that would help guide me in my fitness journey without intimidation.

How long have you been training with FBD?

Over two years

What do you do in the “real world?”

I am a mom of a very active five year old boy, a wife and a Computer Literacy/Technology Teacher.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?

I ran my first 5K when I was 37 years old.

What is your favorite exercise and why?

I like upper body the best but I also like jumping exercises like box jumps because I feel strong when I can jump high!

What are your biggest fitness/health achievements so far?

I have lost 40lbs over the last two years with a healthy diet and consistent exercise. I have gained health and definition in my body which I have never had before.

Also, receiving first place in our division in the Terrior Tough race with my fabulous FBD friends! Oh and doing a handstand! Should I go on….:)

What inspires and motivates you?

Staying healthy fit and active for my family, and the friendships and fit family I have gained through FBD!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining FBD?

It’s a great small gym that will support your individual needs and help you reach your fitness goals!

June 2018 Member of the Month

Why Liz was nominated by the trainers:
Congratulations to Liz T., our recent Challenge Winner!

Liz has come so far in very little time and she snuck up on us (she’s pretty quiet). Since starting with us in May she has consistently trained 4-5 times per week. During the 5-week challenge Liz lost 15 pounds and dropped 4% body fat. Imagine what she’ll continue to do! Keep up the great work, Liz!

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
Since May 2018

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
A few things finally broke the camel’s back where I said, enough was enough. I had a health issue a few years ago that the doctor advised i needed to take on a healthier lifestyle. I ignored it and began eating to deal with it all. I got to the point where clothes didn’t fit anymore, and i was even considering a breast reduction. I became super self conscious. I also realized i was setting a terrible example for my daughter. I didn’t want to live like this anymore. A friend had been working out at FBD the past year and seen great results. When the Summer Challenge came along, she told me about it & how it was all women of all ages, and a non judgmental, safe environment she’d seen great results in. I made the decision to finally jump on the bandwagon.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I’ve become much stronger and learned to push myself to levels i never thought i could ever be at. I also learned through the challenge how to eat healthy and make the right food choices.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I like that I’m able to come in and there’s a structured workout routine i’m doing for 45 min. I’m not walking around a huge gym aimlessly wondering what to do. The trainers and smaller classes make it so much more personable i look forward to showing up in morning.

What do you do in the “real world?”
I work for an Insurance Company, for the past 17 years.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
That I only started driving my first automatic car 2 years ago. I’ve driven only standard cars my whole life.

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
10 mths

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
My mother actually inspired me to join. She told me she found this nice place we can work out together at. We have stuck with it and enjoy the classes.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I’ve lost little over 20 pounds and feel great in my skin. I’ve gained confidence in myself too.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I love the great friends I have met through my journey. Also love the trainers who push me to be better.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
I’d tell them to just join. You will not be disappointed. It’s a family.

Share your experiences and outcomes from the most recent Challenge:
My goal was 5 pounds in 5 weeks. I met my goal and learn to eat better. It was fun as well.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
For the past 10 months I feel great. I am so happy I am a part of the FBD family. I love the classes- they are not too big, and the trainers correct me on my form and push me to do better. Very motivating. I have met some awesome ladies.

Celina M – Lost 25 pounds, dropped 7% body fat, Lost 20 inches

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
1 year!!

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I joined FBD as a present to myself. I had had enough. I felt horrible and was hating the way I looked. I lived in baggy clothes and dreaded a photo being taken. I knew I was ready for a lifestyle change.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have improved my balance, overall stamina, I am able to deadlift 80 pounds, can tackle a set of burpees head-on, and have made working out and healthy eating part of my everyday routine and lifestyle.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I love the fit family community atmosphere. The ladies keep me accountable and motivated to show up for class. I love the small class size, the personalized workouts and the ability to work and train your whole body in 30-45 minute sessions day in and day out.

What do you do in the “real world?”
By day I am an art teacher at Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
I am a freelance watercolor artist focusing on pet portraits, house portraits, and landscapes.

What is your favorite exercise and why?
I love the upper body session, especially deadlifting, kettlebell swings, and am learning to love pull ups.

What inspires and motivates you?
I am inspired by the ladies of FBD who push us to be our best selves. They keep us motivated to keep moving forward, to be our best selves.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
I was on the fence in the beginning in joining yet another new gym. I had tried many different gyms and none had stuck. I started at FBD weighing in at close to 170 lbs but once I committed and started experimenting with healthy eating, I dropped to the 130s. With FBD it is different, I look forward to going to class, look forward to the different challenges we can take part in, and love knowing that the work I am putting in daily is leading to results.

April 2018 Member of the Month

Why Wendy was nominated by the trainers:
Wendy is a new member to FBD and has impressed the trainers with her commitment to working out regularly, having a very positive attitude all the time, and making fitness gains in just a short amount of time.

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
I started March 22 with the free consultation and introductory training session. I schedule three sessions a week and make a commitment to myself to keep with it.

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I have always struggled with my weight and that’s the one obstacle I felt I could not overcome. When my scale started creeping towards 200 pounds, I really got scared. It was time to do something about it. I tried gyms but found them to be boring. FBD offers women-only classes and that enticed me to look into it more.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have accomplished many firsts. I had never ran before, never did heavy lifting, never worked out hard, never did pushups, and never worked in a group before. I have currently lost 6 pounds and I notice a difference in my strength and stamina. Overall I feel great and love the direction I am taking.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I love that each and every session is different and exciting. From the first session and to date, I find the classes fun and exhilarating. There is no greater feeling than finishing a session so uplifting and rewarding. The instructors make it all enjoyable and personable too. I love their encouragement and drive to make my experience great!

What do you do in the “real world?”
I work fulltime in Berlin as an Administrative Assistant for Cambridge Specialty. I have been there 15 years this Fall. I am married for 31 years to Tom who makes everything special for me. I have two wonderful daughters: Karlena just completed her first year at University of Las Vegas with High Honors, and Sherilyn will graduate from Berlin High School 2019 (the top 2% of her class). As you can see, I have a lot to be thankful for.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
I am infatuated with the Kennedy’s and Princess Diana. I read every book and article on them.

What is your favorite exercise and why?
My favorite exercise is the wall squat. It’s very easy to do yet it is very hard to maintain. I feel the benefit of this exercise long after it’s over.

What inspires and motivates you?
For once I am doing something just for me. I know it is the hardest thing I’ll ever do. I quit smoking over 33 years ago cold turkey and gave up drinking to ward off migraines. So now I’m left with the most difficult challenge of all; my weight. My inspirations are my family but mostly myself so I can be happy with the way I look and feel. I don’t want to be described or remembered as a big woman, but rather for my accomplishments.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
If you want to change and if you’re looking for something different, exciting, and challenging then Fitness By Design is just what you’re looking for. There is nothing else like it. Try it, you’ll like it, and you’ll be amazing for it!!

WENDY T.

March 2018 Member of the Month

Why Leslie was nominated by the trainers:
We are so proud of her consistency and hard-work over the past year and more! Leslie’s dedication and hard work inspires and motivates others every day.

She has lost more than 10 LBS of body fat, and gained an enormous amount of strength. Always excelling at push-ups, pull-ups and everything else she takes on. Leslie also challenges herself outside of the studio with road races and tough terrain races, and is a great role model for her daughters!!

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
A little over a year.

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I was recovering from back surgery and wanted to get back in shape and exercise safely. A few of my friends were also looking to start working out, so we all joined at the same time.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
A tremendous amount of strength, some great friendships, and even a little bit of confidence.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
The community of women with like-minded goals that bond us as a fitness community.

What do you do in the “real world?”
I am a teacher and media specialist.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
I played Division I softball at UCONN for four years.

What is your favorite exercise and why?
Any exercise on the boxing bag.

What inspires and motivates you?
I am inspired by so many of the other women at FBD. I am motivated to be healthy and to be a good role model for my daughters and to help set them up for a healthy lifestyle.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
This has been the first exercise program that I have participated in and had results, since before I had kids. It’s the perfect fit for anyone juggling a busy schedule.

LESLIE C.

February 2018 Member of the Month

Why Jean was nominated by the trainers:
Jean has always come in with a positive attitude, and is kind enough to refer FBD to everyone she comes across. She is very proactive about achieving her goals – always asking questions on how to make her workouts and diet more effective. She is dedicated and focused, and gives 100% in her workouts. Jean has gone from 28% body fat to 23% body fat in just 6 months!

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
I started training at FBD in Sept 2017.

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I was researching for a new gym/fitness center and came across FBD.

Two things that attracted me to this fitness center:

1) It is a local business
2) I like the small group training classes that they offer

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I finally accomplished a body transformation challenge! We just finished a 6-week challenge. I’ve learned a lot from it.

I’ve learned how to cook foods that are healthy and delicious.

I’ve learned how to grocery shop healthy. Most of all, within the five months I’ve been with FBD, my body had gone through some amazing transformation results!

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
Training with a group of women of various ages, sizes, strength, have kids/don’t have kids. They are all empowering and motivating. We all have the same common goal: to stay fit and healthy.

I have never been in a fitness center where the trainers are so easily accessible and very motivating. I love the fact that the trainers see all of us as individuals in regards to our fitness level. What may work for her, may not work for me.

It’s great that the group workouts can be modified for just about anyone. The trainer will show you how to make the workout harder if you are advanced in your fitness level.

What do you do in the “real world?”
I am a night shift nurse.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
I am addicted to makeup brushes, LOL

What is your favorite exercise and why?
Lower body workout, CORE and HIIT. I love all these exercises because it targets my problem areas. Abs, thighs, and buttock.

What inspires and motivates you?
My two beautiful children.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
I would tell that person to try it out. The fitness center has a family feel to it. The trainers are professional and very knowledgeable. What separates this fitness center from others is that the trainers customize your goal to your fitness level. We may workout as a group but the trainers know our individual limitations.

JEAN I.

January 2018 Member of the Month

Why she was nominated by the trainers:
Patti comes to class regularly, always with a smile on her face! She greets all the other clients…
When she started, Patti had severe back pain and would need a lot of modifications. With hard-work and determination, Patti has been able to do things (such as burpees) that she never imagined she would be doing. Patti takes part in all of the challenges and encourages everyone to keep pushing. :)

She always comes in with a positive attitude…She’s taken ownership of her workouts to get the best results for herself.

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
August – 2017

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I know my daughter Katie wanted to get in shape. I knew this is something that we could do together.

Also, small classes.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have tightened my core which helps my back pain tremendously.

I just want to add that I have met some really nice ladies that workout at FBD.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
All the classes that I attend are very challenging. The friendly atmosphere. All the trainers really care about your success. Also, they modify certain exercises that are good for me.

What do you do in the “real world?”
I Work at the Department of Veteran Affairs. I am a Purchasing Agent.

What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about You?
I recently did zip lining in Mexico.

What is your favorite exercise and why?
I really love the TRX. I never experienced using one. It makes it easier to work on upper body strength for me. I even purchased one.

What inspires and motivates you?
Just the feeling of being healthy and able to incorporate exercise in my daily routine.

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
Do it! You won’t regret it!! FBD really cares about your success!! That’s a promise.

How long have you been training at Fitness By Design?
6 months

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I was looking for a new way to get motivated, and a friend encouraged me to join together.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have lost 40 pounds, over 20 inches, and almost 10% body fat

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I never get bored. Meaghan is always finding new ways to challenge me and sends great tips and motivational articles. Jen pushes me to do my personal best during every workout . All of our trainers are the best!

I started FBD with a few friends and have met others along the way with similar goals. It’s is really a family atmosphere – so much more than running on the treadmill at the gym!

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
I have done athletics, running, fitness classes, machines, and various weight management programs throughout my life, but this has changed my body and my perspective more than anything else I’ve done. It’s worth it.

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
Seeing great results from my sister and friends who had joined!

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have accomplished a great deal so far. I have lost weight and inches and have gotten so much stronger in such a short period of time. I can now do exercises I was not able to months ago.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I love the small classes. I was never one to work out and would always feel intimidated going to a gym so I would never go. I don’t feel this way at all at FBD. It’s like a family and everyone motivates one another. The trainers are awesome and push us all the time!

What would you tell somebody else considering joining FBD, but might be on the fence?
Definitely give it a try. I was the same way , was super hesitant and now it was the best decision I made. I feel stronger, healthier and happier!

What inspired or motivated you to join FBD?
I wanted to have more energy and become stronger.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
I have built muscle and have become so much stronger. I can endure much more in class now and feel more confident in doing so.

“I joined FBD because it felt like it was a good place to get support and it wasn’t intimidating to me. I checked out a couple other places and the fit was not good for me. I had not really exercised in years and needed to start a change in my life for me and those that count on me. To be stronger in body and mind. I have been with FBD for about four months and feel great, can manage my stress better, sleep better and feel stronger. No more back pain or headaches! Stronger core. Pants fit better too! Not really trying to lose weight but I think it is happening! Everyone there is great: fellow members, instructors and even that strong, sweaty woman I see in the mirror every now and then! The idea of HIIT and strength training is fantastic and I think it gets you more results than a 45 minute jog on a treadmill. I was recovering from back surgery and wanted to make sure I was working out smarter so as not to further injure myself.

What have you accomplished so far through your training?
The day I joined I could only walk 2 mph with my physical therapist on the treadmill for about 10 minutes. I can now run a 10 minute mile. Since I’ve been at FBD I have lost 15 pounds, 4% body fat and have done multiple 5k races.

What do you like most about your experience so far at FBD?
I love the team mentality. It really is a fitness community. All the women who workout there are encouraging and help push each other. The trainers vary the workouts so I never get bored with the exercises. Also, Meaghan offers challenges along the way that make it fun and motivational.

Results aren’t going to happen overnight, but if you really give FBD a shot, you will not regret it!
